Jean-Marie Rens studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels with J-C Bartsoen and Marcel Quinet. After graduating in composition, fugue and counterpoint, he specialized with O. Messiaen, P. Boulez and T. Takemitsu.
His works have been performed by l'Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles, the National Orchestra of Belgium, Voices of Europe, the World youth Choir, J-P Dessy, G. Deppe,...and he recieved composition awards such as the Agniez award (CRMB), SABAM award, Muizel Huis Koncerten award,...
He teaches musical analysis at the Conservatory of Liège and is Head of the Music Academy of St Gillis (Brussels).
Among his major influences are Stravinsky and Bartok (rigor in matters concerning the form) Boulez (manipulations of pitches and duration in the spirit of "serialism") and Ligeti (reflexion on the perception of time) .
